Lower Extremity Reconstruction

RESTORING FUNCTION AND APPEARANCE OF LOWER LIMBS.

BSSNY plastic surgeons performing lower extremity reconstruction

Lower extremity reconstruction is a type of surgery performed to restore and reconstruct lower limb injuries following trauma, infection, or cancer. Most of these types of injures not only cause chronic pain but also limit walking and quality of life.

The goal of limb salvage is to restore the best possible limb function and appearance in an effort to avoid partial or complete amputation.

Surgical Technique

The BSSNY Plastic Surgery Center of Excellence takes a multidisciplinary approach that integrates plastic surgery, orthopedic surgery, and vascular surgery to achieve the best functional and aesthetic outcomes.

Lower extremity reconstruction is a complex procedure due to a number of factors including the location and extent of your injury(ies). Among the most commonly used surgical techniques we use are fasciocutaneous flaps, muscle flaps, tissue expansion, free tissue transfer, and microsurgery. Surgery can take anywhere from 2 – 6 hours and will be conducted under general anesthesia.

Recovery

The healing process for lower extremity reconstruction depends on the extent of the injury and the type of surgery we perform. Because multiple factors are involved, recovery time varies for every individual. Generally speaking, however, healing from lower extremity reconstruction can take up to six weeks. Depending on the severity of the injury, it can take up to a year for you to be able to resume your pre-injury activities.
