Concussions

PROVIDING SPECIALIZED CARE FOR CONCUSSIONS

BSSNY’s Concussion Center provides comprehensive assessment, treatment, and rehabilitation services to individuals who have suffered a blow to the head.

When someone receives a concussion – a type of traumatic brain injury (TBI) – they have typically received some type of blow to the head or to the body that has caused the head and brain to move rapidly back and forth. This sudden movement can cause the brain to bounce around or twist in the skull, creating chemical changes in the brain and sometimes stretching and damaging brain cells.

Most concussions will resolve within a week or two once headaches and other symptoms subside. However, about 20 percent of concussions are more complex and will require specialized medical expertise.

That’s where the BSSNY Concussion Center comes in. Our program provides an integrated, multidisciplinary approach to evaluate and treat both children and adults with concussions. We specialize in providing individualized care and creating a patient-centered treatment plan.

At your first appointment, you will be evaluated by a BSSNY neurosurgeon who is highly trained in concussion management and who will provide expert concussion treatment. The appointment typically includes:

  • Cognitive testing
  • Vision assessment
  • Social/emotional evaluation
  • Balance assessment
  • Neck pain/injury assessment, with referrals to physical therapy or pain management as needed

Our physicians and staff are specifically trained and highly skilled in treating concussions, working together to address the whole patient and help you return to living your life.
